History of the Thursday Night Jam Session

The Thursday Night Jam Session was first started by drummer Marly Waak at the "Justa-Cuppa-Coffee" cafe in late 2000.  It featured Marly on drums, Justin Grinnell on bass, Mike Scarafone on guitar, and Jay Jay Lim on piano.  When the cafe closed, the session was moved to the Tivoli bar in the Gaslamp, where it thrived for most of 2001.  However, the quartet grew weary of the parking situation and the occasional obnoxious behavior of the clientele and moved the jam session to the Gospel Cafe on El Cajon Boulevard.  The Gospel Cafe switched ownership twice and has since become the Hot Monkey Love Cafe, owned and manged by Alma and Rick Felan since the summer of 2002.  The jam session thrived at the Hot Monkey Love Cafe and maintained its Thursday Night slot for several years.  However, in 2007, it was time for another move.  Starting in May 2007, the jam session moved to musician-friendly South Park Bar and Grill.
